How To Find The Best Red Lipstick For You

Hello lovelies!

Among the many classics we have in our beauty and style lives, we have those who always stay at every decade. Those include the little black dress, a pearl necklace, and…a red lipstick!

Indeed, it has been a makeup classic since at least 2500 BC. At that period, ancient Sumerians started to crush red rocks to paint their lips. Since then, red lipstick has stayed a staple in our makeup routines, despite the constant beauty innovations.

But why such fuss around red lipstick? Well, red lipstick is bold and commands attention. Also, it’s a perfect appeal to kiss those lips!

However, with all the current lipstick offer on the market, choosing the right shade can be a little overwhelming. Indeed, the shade that suits your girlfriend is not necessarily the best lipstick shade for you. But we have good news! Thanks to this article, choosing the best red lipstick for your skin tone won’t be a secret for you anymore!

How to determine your skin tone and undertone for your best red lipstick

The first step to find the best red lipstick for every skin tone is to define your skin tones and undertones. When you identify them correctly, then you will be able to pick the correct red lipstick shade for you.

You have three major skin tones: fair, medium, and dark.

As for undertones, they also come in three groups: cool, warm, and neutral.

If you don’t know your own undertone, I have a tip for you. All you need is to look at the color of your veins on your wrist. If they’re green, then you have warm undertones. Blue veins screams cool undertones. However, if your veins seems colorless or blend within your skin, you have neutral undertones.

This tip is also very useful to determine what colors suit you if you want to buy clothes. But this is not the topic of the day!

To choose the right shade for you, you must refer to your undertone. Actually, your skin color doesn’t really matter in this case. For instance, a white person and a black person with cool undertones can wear the same lipstick shades.

Cool undertones

If you have a cool undertone, red lipsticks with blue or purple base will be very flattering on you. Indeed, they will instantly elevate your look and make your teeth appear whiter. For instance, you can choose berry colors to perfectly complement your complexion.

Best shades for you: cherry, wine, berry, purple

Example: Nyx Professional Makeup Shout Loud Satin Lipstick, Bright Berry

Warm undertones

If you have warm undertones, red lipsticks with yellow, orange, or golden base are just what you need! Indeed, they will add an effortless glamour to your look and increase your sunny side.

Best shades for you: brick, terracotta, candy apple

Example: MAC Matte Lipstick, Kinda Sexy Lipstick Woman

Neutral undertones

If you have neutral undertones, then you’re lucky! All shades of red lipstick suit you. So, you can play around with all kinds of red shades. However, if you hesitate between all these shades, always choose a matte lipstick to achieve a sophisticated look.

Best shades for you: every shade, but deep corals and cranberry in particular

Example: Maybelline New York Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick Makeup, Ruby Red

A red lipstick shade for everyone?

In this day and age of inclusivity, many beauty brands tend to create red lipsticks that everyone can wear. And that’s a good thing! Personally, if I had to recommend a universal shade, that would be Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet 46 Magnetique. It’s a classic that stood the test of time on the market. Also, it’s enriched with jojoba oil and shea butter to moisturizer your lips while giving them the best pop of color!

    Hey Hey,

I always struggle with finding the right colors when I am shopping for new makeup. I never thought about figuring out my undertone first. I thought that was really helpful. I realise that I have always bought the wrong shade of red for me. I am a major Taylor Swift fan, so I always went for a red lipstick color as close to hers, but it always looked weird on me. I think its because I have a different skintone than her. I am eager to find a red color that suits me! SOOO thankyouuu for helping me  figuring this out 🙂

    1. You’re welcome Asia!

Thanks for this article on how to find the best red lipstick for yourself. I have a granddaughter who has been asking questions, and I really do not have such answers at the ready, since it is not my strong point! I have read through everything and feel confident that this is what she needs.

So I will pass on the link to her, she is at that age when she likely will be more comfortable getting the information from you and this post as opposed to me the old grandpa!  Most definitely all red lipstick is not created the same and there is a shade that fits better based on skin tone and also I think the effect the woman is going for.

You have clearly laid out the means to figure out what might work best, and although I think that on-site testing is best, buying online is also possible these days if you know what you are ordering and why. Having such information as what you have included is essential.

    1. Thanks for your comment! And yes, online testing is better but these days…

    Hi Elodie,

The blog post is well-written, informative, and engaging. It provides useful and practical advice for anyone who wants to find their perfect red lipstick. The tone is friendly and conversational, and the images are clear and attractive. The only thing that could be improved is the formatting of the product recommendations, as they are not very visible or clickable. A table or a list with links would make it easier for the readers to find and purchase the products.

Overall, I think this is a great blog post that covers everything you need to know about finding the best red lipstick for you. It is informative, engaging, and fun to read. Keep up the good work, Elodie!

Your advice on experimenting and not being afraid to try different shades is a game-changer. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with makeup choices, but your encouragement to step out of our comfort zones is liberating. Have you ever had a personal breakthrough moment with a bold lipstick that completely transformed your look or how you felt about yourself? I’d love to hear about it! Additionally, your mention of considering the occasion and the rest of the makeup look is crucial. It’s amazing how a red lipstick can be versatile and work for both casual and formal settings with the right outfit and makeup pairing. Thank you for this comprehensive guide – it’s a valuable resource for anyone looking to rock a red lip!

    1. Thank you!

    Hey Elodie,

    Great article, thank you.

As you quite rightly state, some classics will always continue, no matter the current fashion or latest trends etc. And they are the lil black dress and red lipstick! So true.

That test for undertones is fantastic. I’ve had someone try to explain that to me in the past, but never so simply, and its remarkable how obvious it is once it’s laid out so clearly.

You can see how much make-up has evolved in recent years, go back say only a decade or so, make-up was not really geared toward women of colour, and so its great learning that the undertone is what is most relevant not the shade of your skin.

    I learned something today.

    Thank you

    Cherie ;o)

  8. Hello there! I absolutely adore a good red lipstick, but I’ve been struggling to find a replacement after my go-to NARS shade was discontinued. Thanks for the helpful guide on how to choose the perfect shade based on skin undertone. It’s remarkable how undertones can make all the difference in how a red lipstick complements your complexion (I’ve tried a lot that definitely don’t complement me!). Thanks for simplifying the process of finding a new iconic red! 💄💋
