The Cold Cream Cleansing Ritual: The Vintage Makeup Remover

One of the most iconic beauty tools from the past isn’t a tool at all. Actually, it’s a product: cold cream.

Dating back to ancient Greece, many beautiful women have always revered cold cream as a multi-tasking beauty staple. Cold cream gained immense popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries, as women sought effective yet gentle ways to cleanse their skin.

Before foaming cleansers and micellar waters took center stage, cold cream was a go-to for removing makeup, hydrating the skin, and maintaining a luminous complexion.

Why You Should Try It

Cold cream is a luxuriously thick, creamy emulsion that effectively melts away even the most stubborn makeup, including waterproof formulas. And cold cream does perfectly its job without stripping your skin of its natural oils.

Its nourishing properties make it an excellent choice for those with dry or sensitive skin. Moreover, its soothing formula can be a calming end to a long day. Massage cold cream onto your face and wipe it off with a warm, damp cloth. You will transform your nighttime routine into a relaxing, spa-like experience. Trust me!

How to Use It

Scoop a generous amount of cold cream and apply it to your face in circular motions. Then, letting it dissolve makeup and impurities. Use a soft, warm towel to gently wipe off the cold cream. This will leave your skin clean, supple, and moisturized. Moreover, there’s no need to follow up with a traditional cleanser—this is a one-step process.

My recommendation

You can find classic versions of cold cream from brands like Pond’s, which has been a beauty favorite for over a century. And the good news is that this cheap product has been a favorite of many vintage celebrities – Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Dolly Parton, or even Kylie Minogue, just to name a few!

You can the classic cold cream or the fragrance-free version if you have dry/sensitive skin.

The Metal Eyelash Curler: Perfectly Curled Lashes with a Classic Tool

Before electric eyelash curlers or lash-lifting treatments became popular, there was the humble metal eyelash curler. Invented in 1920, this tool revolutionized the way women enhanced their lashes.

Thus, the metal eyelash curler offered a way to achieve dramatically curled lashes without any complicated procedures. The original design—featuring a clamp that curls lashes—has remained largely unchanged for nearly a hundred years. Why would you change something that works so well?!

Why You Should Try It

A good quality metal eyelash curler can instantly elevate your look. Indeed, it will make your eyes appear larger and more awake with minimal effort. It’s an easy way to achieve a wide-eyed, polished look without relying solely on mascara.

Also, when used properly, it’s gentle on the lashes and doesn’t require any heat or harsh treatments.

How to Use It

Start by placing the curler at the base of your upper lashes, making sure all your lashes are inside the clamp. Gently squeeze the curler for a few seconds, then release. Do you want an even more dramatic curl? Then, you can work your way along the length of your lashes, squeezing at the base, middle, and tip. Follow up with your favorite mascara for extra lift and hold.

My recommendation

Iconic brands like Shu Uemura and Tweezerman offer beautifully crafted metal eyelash curlers that have earned their place in vintage beauty lore.

The Boar Bristle Hair Brush: Healthy, Shiny Locks the Natural Way

vintage beauty tools 5

Have you ever heard about the 100 brush strokes before going to bed to have shiny and long hair? Well, if that’s your belief, this vintage beauty tool is for you! Long before heated styling tools and serums dominated the haircare scene, women relied on natural-bristle brushes to maintain their hair’s health and shine.

The boar bristle brush became a must-have in the Victorian era. Still, it remains a beloved tool for those seeking to achieve glossy, smooth hair without relying on modern-day products. These brushes are made from natural boar bristles. They are incredibly gentle on the hair and scalp, making them ideal for regular brushing.

However, I must warn that if you have afro hair, brushing is not for your hair type. Instead, you must rely on the Afro hair comb to detangle your hair. But you may use the boar bristle brush to smooth your edges, refine your hairstyles, and get a more polished look.

Why You Should Try It

Boar bristle brushes help distribute the natural oils from your scalp down the length of your hair. Thus, they can reduce the need for additional products and help your hair maintain its health and shine.

Also, regular brushing with a boar bristle brush stimulates the scalp. Therefore, it’s the ideal tool to promote healthy hair growth and reduce frizz and breakage. Have you ever dreamed of having the smooth, shiny hair of old Hollywood actresses? Then, this brush might just be your secret weapon!

How to Use It

Start by brushing your hair from root to tip in long, even strokes. The key is to be gentle and let the brush glide through your hair, which allows the natural oils to be evenly distributed. You can use it on dry hair to smooth it out and add shine, or after applying a leave-in conditioner to help detangle and condition your hair.

My recommendation

I love classic brands like Mason Pearson! Indeed, they have been producing high-quality boar bristle brushes for over a century. This makes them a worthwhile investment for vintage beauty aficionados.

If you want cheaper high-quality boar bristle brushes, I recommend the Denman Cushion Hair Brush.

The Jade Roller: Ancient Skincare Wisdom for a Modern Glow

Like gua sha, jade rollers have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. However, their history goes back centuries. Originating in ancient China, jade rollers were used by royalty and high-society women to improve circulation and maintain a youthful complexion.

The coolness of the jade stone, combined with the gentle rolling motion, was believed to reduce puffiness, smooth the skin, and promote relaxation. Today, jade rollers are a favorite for those who want to incorporate a little luxury and tradition into their skincare routine.

For example, I am an absolute fan of jade rollers. And if you add that jade supposedly brings prosperity to the user, there’s another reason to include it in your skincare routine!

Why You Should Try It

Using a jade roller regularly can help boost circulation and reduce puffiness (especially around the eyes). Moreover, it can enhance the absorption of serums and moisturizers. The cooling sensation of the jade stone feels incredibly soothing. This makes it a perfect addition to your morning or nighttime skincare routine. Also, it’s a low-tech, eco-friendly tool that requires no batteries or charging. It’s just pure, simple beauty!

How to Use It

Apply your favorite serum or moisturizer. Then, gently roll the jade roller across your face, working from the center outwards and upwards.

Use the larger end for your cheeks, forehead, and neck. You will use the smaller end for more delicate areas like around the eyes. For an extra cooling effect, I store my jade roller in the refrigerator before use.

My recommendation

Jade rollers from brands like Mount Lai or Herbivore offer beautifully crafted designs. They combine ancient wisdom with modern elegance.

The Manual Face Massager: Vintage Sculpting and Toning Tool

vintage beauty tools 8

Before high-tech facial devices became all the rage, manual face massagers were a staple in women’s beauty arsenals. These small, handheld tools improve circulation, tone the skin, and sculpt the face through massage.

Often made of metal, ceramic, or wood, these massagers feature small rolling heads or textured surfaces that work to knead the skin gently. They gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, with Hollywood stars famously using them to keep their complexions taut and glowing.

Why You Should Try It

Research has shown that facial massager increased blood flow and promoted lymphatic drainage. Also, they help relax facial muscles that may contribute to fine lines and tension.

Using a vintage-inspired manual face massager can give you many of the same benefits as modern microcurrent or vibrating devices—without the need for electricity. Also, it offers a relaxing, tactile experience that can help relieve stress and tension after a long day.

How to Use It

Cleanse your skin and apply a facial oil or serum. Then, gently roll the massager over your face, focusing on areas that hold tension, such as the jawline, forehead, and temples. Use upward, outward motions to encourage lifting and toning. You can incorporate this into your daily skincare routine or use it as an occasional self-care ritual.

My recommendation

Look for vintage-style face massagers made of materials like copper or ceramic for a truly authentic experience. You can check this Tekson Facial Roller Massager.

I agree with you about vintage tools. They feel so different; their use means you slow down and take time to be mindful and natural. Automation doesn’t have any place in beautifying humans, in my view.

Cold Cream! I’ve always used it and will always use it. I just love daubing it on and soaking up all the impurities to wipe off. I now know why I prefer it—it doesn’t leech the skin!! I love the fragrance-free version as I’m so sensitive to scents/smells.

The boar-bristle hairbrush intrigues me. Are its teeth boar’s hair? I want to get one of these, so I would be grateful if you could recommend a good make.

Fascinating. I’m delighted you are keeping these tried and tested beauty methods alive and well. Keep it up!

  6. Hi thanks for another great and informative beauty article. I use some of these vintage products and swear by my eyelash curler. They have had a slight upgrade as some are combed. The bottom clamp section has fingers like a small comb. The jade roller is fabulous for puffiness around the eyes. I also like the idea of the face massager as lymphatic drainage is really important to keep skin clear and bright. Thanks for a great article.
