What is a superfood?

superfoods list 1

A superfood is a nutritional bombshell providing the human body with plenty of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Indeed, thanks to their high concentration of nutrients, they even surpass commonly recommended foods such broccoli, spinach, blueberries, and pomegranates.

Moreover, the regular consumption has several benefits for the human body. They help people reduce their risk of chronic disease, lower their weight, and significantly increase their overall well-being.

Also, all the superfoods I will list here have many common points. Indeed, they:

  • detoxify the body
  • fuel the body with energy and nutrients
  • rebalance your health
  • boost your general physical appearance

Why do we need superfoods in our diet?

superfoods list 5

Nowadays, superfoods are an absolute necessity if you’re health-conscious for many reasons. And this is due to the recent developments that we experienced in our modern world.

Indeed, from the day you’re born, your body is under attack from environmental toxins. Since the body is unable to bind and excrete these toxins effectively, their concentration in your body increases every year.

Consequently, the negative effects are not long in coming. Indeed, your immune system is constantly exposed to severe and permanent stress. Furthermore, your cells become increasingly unable to provide your body with sufficient energy. And all this stress leads to systematic hormonal imbalance.

Thus, superfoods can help your body heal and detoxify. Indeed, thanks to their ability to bind toxins, they:

  • help the elimination of toxins in your body
  • reduce the concentration of toxins in the long run
  • provide your cells with important nutrients to boost cellular energy production to healthy levels
  • help to restore your hormonal balance.

Therefore, superfoods seem to be the best and safest way to cleanse, heal, and rebalance our bodies. Also, they’re rather cheap, easy to handle, and versatile.

Below is my best superfoods list. Hope you’ll enjoy it!

Superfood #1: Goji berries

Originating from China, goji berries have been known there as a healing bombshell for 6,000 years. Indeed, they are concentrated bombs of vitamins and nutrients. But what can explain this rise of goji berries as superfoods? Since they contain a high level of antioxidants, they have potent anti-aging effects.

Indeed, goji berries are nutrient-rich and contain a variety of vitamins and minerals. Not only are they rich in antioxidants, but they also contain selenium, carotenoids, and phenols. Also, they promote fat burning and have a positive effect on your skin health.

Also, goji berries will greatly help to detoxify your body. Indeed, many studies have proven that goji berries have positive effects on liver and kidneys.

And last but not least, you can easily incorporate goji berries in your daily diet. For instance, you can add them in your morning muesli, porridge, or yoghurt. Moreover, you can boil them with tea or eat them as a snack. They are very versatile and have a good taste too!

Superfood #2: Acai berries

This palm fruit has long been a staple ingredient in many Brazilian fruit juices. However, for a long time, acai berries were an insider tip of nutrition experts.

Acai berries are one of the strongest source of vitamin C. Moreover, its effects are up to 30 times stronger than that of synthetically produced commercial vitamin C. Contrary to the synthetic vitamin C, natural vitamin C has  a more complex structure. Thus, it will optimally support your immune system, fight free radicals, and help evacuate toxins.

If you don’t find real acai berries, don’t worry! You can buy organic acai powder and include it in your smoothies.

Superfood #3: Maca root

Maca root is a tuber originating from the highlands of South America. It is rich in vitamins B, C, and E. Also, it contains lots of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and amino acids.

Maca root has many benefits for your beauty and wellness. Indeed, consuming mace root regularly will:

  • increase your energy levels and your endurance
  • boost your libido
  • relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and mood swings
  • fight acne and other skin imperfections

In its powder form, it is ideal for adding in smoothies, drinks, foods, and juices. However, you should be careful to avoid heat because maca can lose its effects.

Superfood #4: Spirulina and chlorella

These algae are not only the oldest foods in the world, but they are also the smallest. Nevertheless, these microscopic plants represent the richest source of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and trace minerals the world has to offer.

For example, one kilogram of spirulina has the same nutrient content than 1,000 kilograms of vegetables. Also, spirulina has 12 times the protein content of a beef. Both algae contains lots of chlorophyll as well, which has a high detoxifying effect on your body. Thus, they will help you build new cells by promoting the detoxification of diseased cells.

Moreover, these algae are complete and amazing products for the skin. Thanks to the chlorophyll they contain, they transport oxygen in your body while eliminating toxins and free radicals. Thus, they will help you have a smooth and radiant skin as well. You can watch visible effects after a 3-week treatment of spirulina and chlorella.

These green algae are sold in powder, tablet, or capsule form. You can add them to your smoothies, juices, and raw desserts. Moreover, you can simply drink them with water.

Superfood #5: Supergreen powders

The Supergreen powders designate two kinds of popular green supplements: barley grass and wheatgrass.

Barley grass is the gluten-free leaf of the barley plant. Indeed, early-harvested barley has a high nutritional value. Moreover, barley grass stands out as a real superfood to reckon with. It contains a high alkaline value, chlorophyll, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, manganese, and zinc. Moreover, barley grass is rich in vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, folic acid, and beta-carotene.

As for wheatgrass, it is also one of the most nutritious foods in the world. It contains the perfect combination of the eight essential amino acids that the human body cannot produce itself. Moreover, wheatgrass is an excellent source of iron, and contains important enzymes, as well s numerous vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in chlorophyll, which inhibits the formation of harmful bacteria in the human intestine and promotes the elimination of of toxins and waste from the gut.

Both super greens are available in powder, tablet, and capsule form. You can also add them in smoothies and juices.

Superfood #6: Chia seeds

Originating from Mexico, chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for the protection of the top layer of the skin. Also, they promote wound healing and have anti-inflammatory properties.

Moreover, chia seeds contain high levels of fiber, making them ideal for aiding digestion. Fiber also slows down and reduces feelings of hunger, which can lead to weight loss if you eat chia seeds over a long period. You know what to do if you want to remain slender and fit!

Superfood #7: Aloe vera

Aloe vera is one the most notorious sap plants. Its leaves are thick and fleshy; and people have used them for centuries to heal several ailments. Indeed, aloe vera is known to relieve burns, soothe ulcers, treat gastrointestinal disorders, and alleviate acne outbreaks.

When the leaves of aloe vera are opened, a clear gel rich in nutrients appears. Indeed, aloe vera gel contains antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamins C and E. They help to improve the skin natural firmness, while moisturizing it.

Aloe vera is an incredible plant with an indefinable taste. Thus, it is particularly easy to add its juice or gel in fruit smoothies.

Superfood #8: Cocoa

People who love chocolate like me will be the happiest! Indeed, cocoa powder is rich in antioxidants, magnesium, and vitamin C. These nutrients increase your blood flow and promote cell renewal and healing.

The result should be an improvement in your skin’s appearance. Moreover, you will feel healthier overall, thanks to the potent action of antioxidants in your body.

Raw cocoa powder is ideal for smoothies, puddings, and desserts. Indeed, it tastes delicious and is a healthy alternative to traditional cocoa powders loaded with sugar.

Superfood #9: Pollen

Another superfood on my list is flower pollen. Pollen has along history in nutritional science. Indeed, 5,000 years ago, the Chinese emperor Shen Nung studied the effects of pollen on life extension and body rejuvenation. Since then, it has been an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine.

Pollen is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, and numerous enzymes. Don’t hesitate to add it in your porridge to benefit from its goodness!

Superfood #10: Stevia

If you want to avoid sugar at all costs in your diet, then stevia will be your next best friend! Indeed, this leafy green originating from South America is naturally sweet. Moreover, it will boost your energy without increasing your insulin levels.

However, you should only consume the green raw stevia powder, and not the powder from the stevia extract. The latter is highly refined and has a chemical taste. You can use it in your smoothies, your hot beverages, and your fruit salads.

Thanks for this list of nutritional dynamite.  My wife and I currently have cocoa powder, chia seeds, aloe vera, and super greens in our pantry.  I saved this article because there are some on your list that we will likely try out.

This is the first time I have heard of maca root, and I had never considered flower pollen before.

My wife and I both look a little younger than our chronological age, and we intend to keep it this way.  May your list of super foods prove helpful in our efforts.  We appreciate this discussion.

    1. Thanks Harry!

Hi Elodie, I couldn’t agree more that super foods are an important factor for promoting health and beauty. However, as a man, my main concern is about health rather than beauty, although, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Before I knew of the term “super food”, I’ve always been intrigued about nutrition and how it affects our overall health.

I can only wonder if it’s a co-incidence that at age 69, on a regular basis, people tell me I look like I’m in my 40s or 50s.

Having said that, I think it’s also vitally important that in addition to eating properly, which includes many, if not all the super foods you’ve recommended, that regular exercise and getting the proper amount of good sleep are necessary ingredients. All the factors must be present.

    1. Exactly! Superfoods are just one element but you must also add exercise, fresh air, and good sleep habits.

  3. Thank you for the article. It’s incredible, what you don’t know until you know it!

I had always thought these superfoods were super because of their vitamin and nutrient content. I had no idea that they had detoxicant or antioxidant properties.

It is important what we put into our bodies. Thank you for this list. I will ensure that I buy some of these for myself to try. I think that goji berries sound especially good, both tasty and beneficial for you.

I am embarrassed to admit that I don’t have one thing on your list in my home, even though a lot of these super foods I do enjoy. Chia seeds are one of them but they are difficult to find in my area. I always order food with these seeds in restaurants.
I always thought that mushrooms were a super food. Would you agree with me on this?

    1. Yes they are! But there are some varieties of mushrooms that are more nutritious than others…
