On May 24th, I heard one of the worst pieces of news ever when Tina Turner died. Indeed, a part of my childhood died with her. I grew up with her songs, her dance routines, and her energetic presence on stage. And I’ve always thought that she was one of the most beautiful black women in the entertainment industry. In particular, I’ve always admired her killer legs!
Consequently, I decided to write an article about Tina Turner’s beauty secrets to honor her legacy. Though she was a role model for her resilience and strength during her ordeals, she retained her beauty until her 80s! That’s why she has always been an example to emulate for me.

Beauty is found first and foremost within you
“My greatest beauty secret is being happy with myself. I don’t use special creams or treatments – I’ll use a little bit of everything. It’s a mistake to think you are what you put on yourself. I believe that a lot of how you look is to do with how you feel about yourself and your life. Happiness is the greatest beauty secret.”
According to Tina Turner, her best beauty secret was happiness. Despite all the problems she had, the more she handled everything with grace, the better. Also, she had a regular spiritual practice – she was a devout Buddhist, and meditated everyday.
Her spiritual practice gave her strength during difficult times, especially when she had marital problems with her first husband. For the record, her first husband was violent because of substance abuse and used to beat her. Fortunately, she managed to escape this toxic and abusive relationship, and saved her own life in the process.
One of her favorite mantras was “Change poison into medicine”. Thus, she could turn negative situations or blockages into positive outcomes. If you want to emulate her, try to recite positive affirmations every morning during your morning routine. This will rewire your brain and change your mindset forever. I’ve tried this and I can guarantee that it works!
Age ain’t nothing but a number
“Age is no issue to me. I think 50 is the new 30 and 70 is the new 50. There are no rules that say you have to dress a certain way or be a certain way.”
Moreover, Tina Turner’s eternal youthfulness was linked to the fact that age was only a number for her. She didn’t think of herself as old, even in her eighties! For her, 50 was the new 30 and so on. I really like her mindset and I try to adopt this as well.
Thanks to this mindset, she could start her solo career at 44 in the 1980s. As a remainder, in that era, a woman in her 40s was already old and impossible to market to the public anymore. Take note, ladies!
Tina Turner’s skincare
Thanks to her African American and Native American heritage, Tina Turner was blessed with great skin that didn’t age. However, she still took great care of her skin. She didn’t believe in plastic surgery and relied on natural solutions to keep her skin soft and supple.
She had a regular self-care routine to feel good in her skin. Her faithfulness to a specific cosmetic brand is not documented. However, she religiously cleansed, toned, and moisturized her skin twice a day.
Moreover, Tina Turner believed a lot in the benefits of beauty sleep. She always slept 10 to 12 hours per night. As a result, she woke up with a fresh face everyday! She was late to bed and late to rise. Someone needs to call Benjamin Franklin…
Tina Turner’s diet
Tina Turner had a sensible diet and didn’t restrain herself. She enjoyed every type of food: Thai, vegetarian, and even Swiss delicacies. Like many women of her generation, she ate everything in moderation. As Tina Turner rose late, she only had two meals a day. She didn’t eat after 6 pm and drank lots of water.
Also, she hated calorie counting – I have something in common with her because I hate it too! However, when she was touring, she cut back on chocolate and animal fats like cheese and cream.
Tina Turner’s exercise routine
If you’ve seen Tina Turner’s performances on stage (especially when she sang Proud Mary), you can’t deny that her stage presence was electrifying. She enjoyed dancing all the time and also practiced yoga and Pilates to remain flexible.
Also, as she lived in Switzerland, she spent time outdoors in the mountains. Indeed, she appreciated communing with nature because she found it relaxing and spiritual.
Tina Turner’s makeup routine
When she was touring, Tina Turner did her own makeup. Though we don’t exactly know her makeup techniques, we can say that she was as skilled as the best makeup artist in the industry. However, I noticed that red lipstick remained a staple in her overall appearance, even if her makeup was more discreet in her later years than in the 1980s.
Tina Turner’s hair
Up to the 1960s, Tina Turner had a head full of coarse hair that she styled in the fashionable styles of that era. However, one day, her first husband wanted her to dye her hair blond like Marilyn Monroe. Unfortunately, the hairdresser left the dye too long on her hair. The result? Unfortunately, her hair was shedding and remained brittle.
Therefore, she relied on wigs to upgrade her look. Thanks to her wigs, she was the quintessential diva with a lioness mane. Thus, she could embody what she wanted to project – being the queen of rock and roll. She especially enjoyed blond wigs and styled her wigs herself.
However, contrary to the 1980s and the 1990s, her wigs were more classic in her later years. The Queen of Rock and Roll looked like the perfect lady!
Tina Turner’s perfume
Like many celebrities, Tina Turner enjoyed several perfumes. However, her signature fragrance was Eau du Sud by Annick Goutal. This perfume is unisex, with citrus top notes and a very natural smell. Though this fragrance can appear a little masculine for women, I believe that it perfectly embodied Tina Turner’s personality. Why?
Because Tina Turner was the perfect blend of a feminine appearance and masculine power and aura in her artistry. So, I completely understand that she would fall in love with that perfume!
