Hello lovelies!
Skincare trends have taken over social media and the Internet in general over the last twenty years. From facial steaming to jade rollers,I’ve seen many skincare techniques trending on social media. I’ve seen beauty influencers using tons of beauty products in their routines, and I was confused.
Indeed, I’ve always thought that less was more in everything; including in skincare. But with all these techniques, I thought I was mistaken…until I found the Holy Grail of Skincare!
And what is the Holy Grail of Skincare?
Do you believe that there are tons of information about skincare? Do you feel overwhelmed because of the abundance of information? If that’s your case, know you’re not alone! Been there, done that…
Consequently, I’ve decided to dedicate this beginner’s skincare guide to you. Whether you’re a real beginner ou you want to revamp your routine, this article is there for you.
Soon, you’ll realize that building a skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated. Just like me, you’ll find out that you just need to know your skin type. From there, set up an appropriate beauty routine, and be consistent. Also, you mustn’t forget that your skincare routine is linked to your global self-care habits.
I always remember that my mother used to say that “without efforts, you won’t get anything”. That’s what you must remember when you create your skincare routine. And that’s what my ultimate guide to skincare for beginners is about!
Mu Ultimate Skincare Guide: Key Concepts and Benefits
Skincare is the basic care of your skin. Did you know that your skin is your largest organ and plays an important role in protecting you from outside pathogens? Moreover, your skin holds all your internal organs in place.
Consequently, you must have a skincare routine for both medical and cosmetic purposes. A good skincare routine will help you protect your skin against all sorts of diseases and conditions, especially:
- skin cancer
- rosacea
- psoriasis
- eczema
- acne…
And this is true, whatever your skin type is!
The Benefits of a consistent skincare regime on skin health
Once you adopt a skincare routine that suits you, you just have to carry on and be consistent with your skincare routine. This means that you must do it everyday, morning and evening. Discipline never hurts!
A consistent skincare routine with the right products will give you a youthful and radiant skin. However, don’t be discouraged if you don’t see immediate results right away.
If you want to have noticeable and lasting results, you must follow your skincare routine faithfully during at least six weeks. According to Arizona Dermatology, it is the amount of time your skin needs to complete cycle of renewing itself with new skin cells.
From my own experience, I learnt not to be impatient with my skincare routine. I always have a 3-month deadline to review my routine and make necessary changes, if need be.
How skincare can improve self-confidence
Did you know that a good skincare routine can reduce your stress levels and increase your self-confidence? Indeed, a beautiful skin can boost your social confidence and a positive self-image among your peers.
That’s why you must include skincare in a global self-care routine that encompasses your spiritual, mental, and physical needs. And be prepared to receive lots of compliments on your radiant skin!
My Ultimate Skincare Guide: Identifying Your Skin Type and Its Needs
First and foremost, you must know your skin type before choosing the products you need in your skincare routine. Indeed, not every skin has the same needs. Indeed, oily skins need light moisturizers with magnifying ingredients. On the contrary, dry skins will need thicker moisturizers and generally avoid harsh ingredients.
One easy way to determine your skin type is just to observe it during the day. Does your skin become oily? Is it very dry? Does it shine at specific areas of your face?
According to your observations, you can classify your skin among the following skin types:
- Oily skin: your skin looks shiny because of an overproduction of oil
- Dry skin: your skin is dry and flakey, and feels tight
- Sensitive skin: your skin has red and irritated areas, and is painful to touch
- Combination skin: your skin has a combination of dry and oily areas: the latter being located on the “T-zone”: forehead, nose, chin
- Normal skin: your skin is even and doesn’t have specific issues
Depending on your skin type, you will adopt specific products and routines. If you want to determine your skin type, you can try the methods I’ve shared in this article.
My Ultimate Skincare Guide: The Essential Steps of a Beginner’s Skincare Routine
Now is the moment to start building your skincare routine and to choose your daily basic skincare essentials. As a general rule, your skincare routine has three main steps: cleanse, moisturize, and protect. However, you may add other steps, according to your skin needs.
Your daily 3-step skincare regimen in my ultimate skincare guide
Step #1 in my ultimate skincare guide: Cleanse
The first step to a skincare routine is to cleanse your skin twice a day: once in the morning and once in the evening. The cleansing step will help you remove all excess sebum, bacteria, makeup, and other dirt that builds up on the skin.
When you cleanse in the morning, you get rid of all the sweat and oil debris that might build up during the night.
During your morning skincare routine, you can use micellar water, or a gentle soap/cleansing gel, according to your skin type. However, soap is generally shunned at, unless you like vintage skincare routine like me!
However, for your evening cleanse, most skincare professionals recommend a “double cleanse”, especially fi you wear makeup during the day. The first cleanse will help you get rid of all your stubborn makeup. You can use an oil or a cleansing balm for this purpose. Then, you will carry out your second cleanse with a gentle cleanser to remove any excess build up remaining on your skin.
Step #2 in my ultimate skincare guide: Moisturize
Next, you must moisturize your skin to add hydration back to your skin. Also, a well-moisturized skin is healthier, heals better, and has an improved tone and texture.
All skin types must follow this step, even if it seems counterintuitive for oily skins. Did you know that sometimes, your skin becomes oily because it tries to compensate the lack of hydration?
Consequently, you must choose a moisturizer adapted to your skin type. For instance, an oily skin will fare well with lightweight and oil-free moisturizer that won’t add more shine to their skins. On the contrary, people with dry skin will choose a thicker and richer moisturizing formula.
Finally, if you have a normal skin, you’ll just have to be careful about seasonal changes. Thus, use a lighter moisturizer in summer and a thicker moisturizing formula in winter.
Step #3 in my ultimate skincare guide: Sun Protection
This step is essential because UV exposure is the number one reason of premature aging. The main damage occurs when you’re young, although you notice the real effects of sun damage only when you’re older. Therefore, when I see some women not putting sunscreen in their daily routine, I really want scream sometimes!
A good sunscreen will protect your skin from sun damage thanks to SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Indeed, SPF is very important to protect your skin from premature aging, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and skin cancer. According to theAmerican Cancer Society, you must choose sunscreen rated SPF30 or higher to protect you against UVA and UVB sun rays.
Consequently, ensure that you put sunscreen on your face, neck, and chest before going out. Also, put some sunscreen on your arms during summertime if you go out with bare arms.
However, lately, I’ve watched a documentary highlighting that most sunscreens may contain cancer-causing substances, such as benzene. That’s why I recommend you to ask your dermatologist about the right sunscreen to use for you.
Exfoliation: What it is and how often to do it?
Exfoliation helps you removing dead cells from your skin and clear out your pores. There are two types of exfoliants: physical and chemical.
The physical exfoliants use scrubs made of beads, salt, or sugar to exfoliate the skin. As they are harsh and cause micro tears on the skin, many skin experts recommend to avoid them. Instead, they tend to favor chemical exfoliants made of AHA or BHA, because they are gentler on the skin.
Personally, I use exfoliants once a week as I believe that it’s enough for my skin to be radiant. I would recommend you use exfoliants only once or twice a week, especially if you have oily skin.
And please, please, don’t use exfoliants in excess! I’ve seen someone forcing on exfoliation, and her skin became fragile. It seemed like her skin was similar to paper! Don’t make the same mistake, even if you hear otherwise on social media.
The importance of hydration for your skin
Hydration is very important for your skin as it guarantees you a plump, youthful, and wrinkle-free skin. Moreover, a properly hydrated skin prevents toxins from entering your body through your skin.
On the contrary, a dehydrated skin is dry, flaked, wrinkled, and more prone to inflammation and infection. If you don’t want to get a dehydrated skin, there’s one solution: watch what you put in your body!
Personally, my favorite tips is to drink lots of water throughout the day. Aim at drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses. I’ve read in a vintage beauty book that a celebrity was so dedicated to hydrate her skin from within that she would drink 12 glasses of water a day!
What if you don’t like water? Maybe you spice things up a little bit! Put some flavor in your water by adding lemon or oranges – I personally add cranberry juice from time to time to eliminate toxins faster.
Moreover, you may drink unsweetened beverages such as herbal teas, and green tea. And don’t forget to eat more fruits and vegetables to get your skin plump and soft! I’ve written a previous post on the foods you can favor for a beautiful skin here.
My Ultimate Skincare Guide: Navigating skincare products from serums to eye creams
Why are serums important for your skin?
A serum is a skincare product made of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into your skin. Thus, it can deliver you a high concentration of active ingredients that target specific skin concerns, such as wrinkles, dullness, or dark spots.
For this reason, serums have been a very popular skincare staple in many women’s bathroom these last years. Indeed, you can tailor your serum to your specific needs and get great results. Do you need a brighter and smoother skin? Then, a vitamin C serum is just what you need. This active ingredient will protect your skin, reverse sun damage and brighten your skin in the process.
On the contrary, if you need more hydration, then a serum with hyaluronic acid will be your best ally. Indeed, it will add hydration and plumpness to your skin, leaving it radiant and youthful.
If you want to add a serum to your skincare routine, you must use it after your cleanser and toner, and before your moisturizer. However, please keep in mind that a serum is not mandatory if you don’t need it, despite what shrewd marketing campaigns tell you.
Personally, I enjoy a serum from time to time, especially during winter. As I have combination skin, I always feel that I need extra hydration for my skin during that period. And this works wonders for me!
Why should you get face masks?
Just like serums, face masks are useful to target specific skin needs. Indeed, they help hydrate your skin, remove excess oils, and improve the appearance of your pores. Also, you can have a wonderful relaxing spa experience in the comfort of your own home!
The benefits of face masks depend on the active ingredients they contain. For instance, clay masks purify and clarify your skin, whereas exfoliating masks remove dead skins and improve your skin tone thanks to their hydroxy acids.
Apply your face masks once to twice per week, just after an exfoliant. However, you can also use a face mask on its own, on a cleansed skin. You may even make your own DIY masks, with ingredients straight from your kitchen!
Retinol can be your best friend
Do you want to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and lines on your face? Are you looking for a smooth skin texture? If you answer yes to these two questions, then you need to add retinol in your skincare routine.
Retinol is a version of vitamin A that will really transform your skin in the long run. However, since it is a very strong ingredient, there are some precautions to take when you use it.
First, you must always use retinol at night and apply sunscreen during the day, because retinol makes you skin more sensitive to sun exposure. In addition, you shouldn’t mix retinol with hydroxy acids. It’s better to alternate products with these two ingredients in your routine.
Use acne treatment if needed
If you have acne, you will use specific products to treat and heal your skin condition. Most acne treatments come in the form of serums, toners, specific creams, or stickers.
If your acne treatment contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, avoid using retinol in the same time. Indeed, this combination may cause irritation on your skin. Rather, you may use a soothing moisturizing cream on your skin after your acne treatment to keep your skin in control.
Eye creams for a beautiful look
Eye cream is not an essential staple in your skincare routine. However, if you have dark circles around your eyes, or if you have puffiness in this area, then eye cream will be a good add-on in your routine. Also, eye creams will brighten dark circles or smooth fine lines around your eyes.
You may apply your eye cream in the morning and in the evening, according to your needs. I’ll personally advise you to add an eye cream to your skincare routine once you reach your 40s.
How to gradually introduce new products to your routine
Incorporating new products in your routine is not always easy. Indeed, you may not always be sure about the outcome and the reactions of your skin. Consequently, I’ll advise you to try new products when you don’t have to get out, or if you don’t have an important event to attend.
Also, be aware that you should introduce new active ingredients gradually in your skincare routine, especially if they are potentially harsh: AHA/BHA, retinol, or chemical exfoliants.
Another way to introduce new products in your routine would be to test them on a small area of your skin. This patch test may be useful, especially if you have potential allergies.
In any case, always be careful when integrating new products in your routine!
My Ultimate Skincare Guide: Common Skincare Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Despite having the best products, many women make some skincare mistakes. However, you can avoid them easily, by following the advice below.
Stop over-cleansing your skin!
As you may know, many dermatologists and beauticians recommend you cleanse your skin morning and evening. However, you may over-cleansing your skin if you experience several symptoms: redness, skin itching, flakiness, or eczema patches.
Thus, over-cleaning can destroy the protective barrier of your skin and disrupt its natural oil production. Your skin will then become very dry and irritated.
Consequently, it’s very important to choose a gentle cleanser adapted to your skin type. Also, avoid harsh exfoliants that are aggressive to your skin.
You may even only cleanse your face only on the evening, and only rinse your face with warm water in the morning. This last tip might be extremely useful if you have dry, dehydrated skin.
The risk of using incompatible products together
Despite what you may hear from beauty companies, skincare products contain chemicals that can be harmful for your skin. In particular, you must be very careful with active ingredients, especially if you’re an adept of layering.
Here are some ingredients you shouldn’t layer together: retinol/vitamin C serums, retinol/AHA and BHA, or niacin amide serum and vitamin C. All these product combinations cause irritation to the skin.
Consequently, it’s important to rely on your dermatologist or your beautician before choosing products. And always be careful to choose the right products for your skin.type.
Your overall lifestyle is important
Don’t be mistaken: your lifestyle is as important as your skincare products. Actually, your skincare routine is here to complement the healthy lifestyle you have. If you have bad eating habits, never exercise, and don’t drink enough water, then I’m sorry for you!
Indeed, many women think that having the best skincare products will solve all their skin problems. However, nothing is further from the truth than that. You may have cheaper skincare products and have a radiant skin because you have top-tier lifestyle habits.
And may I add that your lifestyle habits are way more cheaper than your skincare products? Sleeping well is free. Exercising may be cheap depending on the options you choose – you may walk everyday, and the only things you’ll pay are your sportswear and your shoes.
Drinking water is cheap. Eating well is moderately cheap – I must say that nowadays, it’s probably less true, considering inflation! Meditation and stress management are cheap.
You get the idea – your lifestyle includes cheap habits that can highlight the action of your skincare products. Don’t neglect them!

The skin is SO important. I’ve recently had lots of trouble with dryness and itching. I got tested and wasn’t allergic to anything I ingested, but then I found that having moved house to an area that is heavily forested, I was retaining pollen on my skin, which caused irritations. Have you heard of this? Can you suggest anything because my doctor’s run out of ideas?
Yes, the skin is the only thing that separates us from the invisible world, so many spiritual elements can affect it, too. I think this is also happening to me. Would love your advice.
Have you tried aloe vera gel? I know this really works for your case. I also know that getting unscented greasy body lotion like Eucerin for example…
I absolutely loved this comprehensive guide on skincare for beginners! Your article was not only informative but also very engaging and easy to follow. I’ve seen so many skincare trends on social media too, and it’s refreshing to read a guide that cuts through the noise and focuses on the essentials.
One thing that resonated with me was the bit about introducing new products gradually. It’s easy to get excited and try everything at once, but your advice to patch test and introduce products slowly is very wise. Thanks again for this fantastic guide! Looking forward to more of your posts.
Thanks Kavitha !

Great guideline for beginners who would like to explore more about skincare and what it ctually does for you. I myself a few years ago struggled a lot with my skin with a lot of acne, which was before I used any type of skincare products. I used some of these guidelines that you told us about and today my skin is all healthy again. I notice right away that if I do not follow my skincare routine for a few days, my skin gets worse right away. So, I always make sure I bring it everywhere I go. This is why I recommend skincare to everyperson I know, becuase even if they might not have acne, the skin usually does feel much better after taking care of it properly. The topic is clear and it is easy to follow along and what is recommended so I really hope people who struggles with their skin read your post.
Dear Anton, thanks for your comment !
When I was a teenager, I was told that the younger one starts with looking after your skin, the better in the long term. And although there have been evenings where I suddenly had a change of plan and didn’t have access to my skin products before going to bed, I know how important it is to be consistent in your routine.
You mention that exfoliating once a week is good to remove dead cells and maintain the radiance of your skin. But would you also suggest using a face mask on a regular basis? Or should a face mask rather be part of a visit to a beautician and professional treatment? Thank you for clarifying.
Hello Line, thanks for your comment! Yes, I recommend having a mask once a week, after exfoliation
Great stuff! Thanks for the comprehensive tips and advice, that was not only informative but also practical for anyone looking to start a skincare routine. The recommendations are quite clear and simple, making it easy for beginners to understand and follow. Hey Elodie,
Your guide is excellent for people getting started. I really appreciate how thorough and easy-to-understand your skincare advice is. Still, I was wondering about the following:
What would you suggest as the initial step for someone moving from a fundamental routine to a more intricate skincare regimen?
Also, do you have any recommendations for individuals with delicate skin who might react adversely to certain products?
Lastly, how frequently should one adjust their skincare routine to accommodate seasonal variations or changes in aging skin?
Your perspectives are precious, and I look forward to your insights.
Dear Sara, thank you for your questions! Actually I have an article dedicated to dry skin where I addressed some of these issues. As for mature skin, I will write an article about it very soon 😅
