However, you must also know that your nails are an important indicator of your overall health. For instance, strong, clean, and well-groomed nails reflect ultimate care and attention for your hands. On the contrary, weak, brittle, or damaged nails might hint at underlying health issues or a lack of proper care.

Whether you’re aiming for beautiful natural nails or prefer manicures, mastering the basics of nail care is essential. Consequently, my ultimate guide to nail care will walk you through everything you need to know about nail care.

  • Nail Plate: the visible, hard part of the nail made up of a protein called keratin.
  • Nail Bed: the skin beneath the nail plate, rich in blood vessels that provide nutrients.
  • Cuticle: the thin layer of skin located at the base of the nail, serving as a protective barrier from bacteria.
  • Lunula: the white, half-moon-shaped area at the base of the nail.
  • Matrix: the hidden part of the nail, under the cuticle, where new nail cells are produced.

Understanding these parts is critical in maintaining nail health. Moreover, this will help you to know how to care for them properly.

Why Nail Care is Important

Nail care is about more than just aesthetics. Indeed, it’s also about hygiene and health. Poor nail hygiene can lead to infections. Indeed, painful conditions like hangnails, or fungal infections are the results of poor nail hygiene.

Moreover, nails can give clues to your general health. For example, discoloration, ridges, or brittleness can be early indicators of deficiencies or health concerns.

Thus, proper nail care can prevent:

  • Painful nail conditions like hangnails
  • Breakage, splitting, and peeling

Effective nail care means you must invest in high-quality tools. Indeed, these tools are crucial to keep your nails strong and attractive. Here are the essentials of proper nail care:

  • Nail Clippers: use them for trimming your nails to avoid breakage or damage.
  • Nail File: smooths edges and shapes your nails. Choose a fine-grit or a glass file to prevent splitting.
  • Cuticle Pusher: gently pushes back your cuticles, keeping them neat and tidy.
  • Cuticle Nipper: helps trim any excess cuticle skin.
  • Buffer: adds shine to your nails and smooths out any uneven surfaces.
  • Nail Brush: a small brush used to clean under your nails.
  • Moisturizing Cream/Cuticle Oil: a must-have for keeping your cuticles and nails hydrated.

I advise you sterilize your tools regularly to prevent infections. Moreover, always make sure tools are sharp and in good condition. This will enable you to perform clean and precise work during your nail care moments.

To have the best nail care tools, you can buy your tools separately. Or you can invest in a manicure kit to have all your tools together. Your kit doesn’t need to be expensive to be effective, believe me!

Personally, I prefer a manicure kit because you have all your tools in a box, and you can travel with it if necessary.

If you want healthy nails, there’s no secret. You will need a consistent routine as the foundation of beautiful nails. Here’s my daily nail care regimen:

Wash and Cleanse Your Nails

Dirty nails have never been attractive to anyone, ladies! Keep your nails clean by gently scrubbing them with a nail brush and soap to remove dirt. Just be mindful of not using metal tools to dig under your nails. Indeed, this can cause damage.

What I also do to strengthen my nails is to soak them in warm water with sea salt and lemon juice. Try this tip if you have brittle nails and thank me later!

Moisturize your hands and nails

Nails, like skin, can become dry and brittle. Apply hand cream or cuticle oil to moisturize your nails and surrounding skin. Vitamin E oil, olive oil, or coconut oil work wonders.

However, you can also use commercial hand creams/cuticle oil for that purpose. I personally recommend the following products:

Trim and Shape Your Nails Regularly

Trim your nails every 1-2 weeks depending on their growth rate. Use a sharp nail clipper and file the edges smooth. This will prevent snags and tears.

Push Back Your Cuticles Gently

Cuticles act as a barrier to protect your nails. Therefore, you should avoid cutting them. Instead, push them back gently! You can do this by using a cuticle pusher after softening them with warm water and/or cuticle cream.

Protect Your Nails from Water

Prolonged exposure to water can soften your nails. Thus, they’ll be more prone to breakage. Therefore, never forget to wear gloves when washing dishes or doing chores that require your hands to be in water.

If you don’t have gloves for now, don’t worry! You just have to apply your usual hand moisturizer after your chores. Just don’t forget about it! Never!

Seasonal Nail Care: Keep Your Nails Strong At Every Season

The changing seasons can have a big impact on your nails. Here are some seasonal tips to keep your nails in top condition year-round.

Winter

Cold weather and dry air can lead to brittle nails. Therefore, keep your hands and nails moisturized with hand cream and cuticle oil. I always have my hand cream in my bag, just in case. And I advise you to do it as well!

Summer

Exposure to sun, chlorine, and saltwater can dry out your nails. Consequently, keep your nails hydrated at all cost. Moreover, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight without sunscreen.

Fall and Spring

These transitional seasons are a great time to give your nails a break from polish. Then, you can focus on natural nail treatments. Don’t hesitate to soak your nails in olive oil during these seasons to strengthen your nails.

As you know, manicure or pedicure are great ways to pamper yourself. However, there are some best practices to follow. Here are the do’s and don’ts of nail hygiene.

Dos

  • Always use clean tools: indeed, you must ensure that the tools used are sterilized to prevent infections.
  • Opt for gentle polish removers: choose acetone-free removers to avoid drying out your nails.
  • Keep your nails short: shorter nails are less prone to breakage and are more hygienic. And in my opinion, shorter nails are classy! Just look at the elite women of this world – the majority of them have shorter nails. Don’t hesitate to copy them!
  • Give your nails a break: let your nails breathe between manicures. Indeed, constant polishing can weaken them. Personally, I alternate a week with nail polish and a week without it. You’ll need to find the rhythm that works best for you and your lifestyle.

Don’ts

  • Cut your cuticles: indeed, cutting cuticles increases the risk of infection. Stick to pushing them back gently with the appropriate tool.
  • Pull off gel nails: this practice can remove layers of your natural nail, leading to severe damage. Instead, soak them off properly before removing them.
  • Use metal tools aggressively: Avoid digging under your nails with metal tools. Indeed, this can damage the nail bed. Actually, I even advise you to avoid metal tools in your manicure/pedicure sessions, unless you have to!

Did you know that your diet has a significant impact on your nail health? Indeed, your nails are made of keratin, a type of protein also present in your hair. Therefore, a protein-rich diet is essential if you want strong and beautiful nails. Below is a breakdown of key nutrients for healthy nails:

  • Biotin (Vitamin B7): you can find it in eggs, almonds, and sweet potatoes. Biotin strengthens your nails and promotes nail growth.
  • Vitamin E: it’s present in fats, and especially nuts and seeds. Vitamin E promotes hydration and prevents brittle nails.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: fatty fish like salmon and flaxseeds provide omega-3s, which nourish your nail beds.
  • Zinc: this nutrient is essential for nail strength. You can find zinc can in spinach, lentils, meat, and cashews.
  • Iron: iron deficiency can cause ridges or spoon-shaped nails. Leafy greens, red meat, and legumes are good sources of iron.

A well-balanced diet rich in these nutrients will ensure your nails stay strong and grow faster. However, if you don’t have a balanced diet, you can get some help by taking dedicated supplements.

Generally, hair supplements also work very well for your nails. For instance, you can take a supplement rich in biotin, MSM, silica, and other amino acids boosting your nail growth. However, you must take them during at least 3 months to see effective results.

  • Cons: Requires frequent maintenance to keep them looking polished.

Artificial Nails (Acrylic, Gel, Dip Powder)

  • Pros: Long-lasting, customizable in length and shape, resistant to breakage.
  • Cons: Can damage natural nails if improperly removed or overused. Also, may lead to fungal infections if moisture gets trapped underneath.

Both options can be healthy as long as you follow proper care guidelines. Personally, I prefer my natural nails. But if you enjoy using artificial nails, do you! Just be sure to give your natural nails a break to prevent long-term damage.

How To Fix It: Go polish-free for a few weeks, and treat fungal infections with an antifungal cream. Moreover, soaking your nails in lemon juice can also help reduce staining. You may also apply a nail whitener if you can’ stay away from nail polish.

Nail Problem #3: Hangnails

Hangnails are torn pieces of skin around the nail.

How To Fix It: Moisturize your nails daily with your favorite cuticle oil. Also, you must never pull on your hangnails! Instead, trim them carefully with clean scissors.

Nail Problem #4: Ridges

Vertical ridges are typically normal and become more pronounced with age. However, horizontal ridges may indicate a more serious health issue.

How To Fix It: buff your nails gently to reduce ridges. For horizontal ridges, consult a healthcare provider who will help you address them adequately.

Reality Check: Actually, your cuticles protect your nails from infection. Therefore, cutting them doesn’t impact your nail growth. Instead, this can even lead to infections.

Myth #2: White spots on your nails indicate calcium deficiency

Reality Check: White spots are usually the result of minor trauma to the nail. Thus, they have nothing to do with a calcium deficiency.

Myth #3: Your nails need to “breathe”

Reality Check: Nails are made of a protein named keratin. Thus, your nails don’t require oxygen. However, giving your nails a break from polish can certainly prevent weakening.

  3. Hi there. Thanks for the very informative article on nails and nail care. Until recently, I was pretty much an au natural nail girl, only getting a manicure for special occasions but recently I’ve been getting Biab, which is a gel polish that lasts really well and can be in filled. It is supposed to be less harsh than acrylics or shellac which causes damage to my nails. My concern is if I stop using Biab my nails will be damaged. Maybe I’ll continue for the summer, I’m in Australia and give my nails a break in autumn and start again  in winter then take a break in spring and continue like this. What are your thoughts on this plan? I love how they look so well groomed all the time. I eat really well so they grow very quickly. Thanks for the informative article.
